Ethiopians Discuss Draft Diaspora Policy in London

PRESS RELEASE - December 5, 2011, LONDON

Ethiopians in the UK deliberated on a new Draft Diaspora Policy at a meeting held on the 3rd December at the London Ethiopian Embassy in the presence of HE Ato Nega Tsegaye, State Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In his speech at the gathering, the State Minister underlined how central it is for the developmental state to enhance public participation as a major force behind the nation building scheme

Ethiopian Diaspora in the UK raise 2 million Birr for Construction of
the Grand Renaissance Dam

PRESS RELEASE

On 29th October, Ethiopians and foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin residing in the UK raised about 2 million birr, by way of bond purchases, pledges and gifts, on the first Bond Selling Day to be held in London.

According to the UK Renaissance Dam Diaspora Participation Coordination Council, members of the Ethiopian community had already pledged close to one million birr which brings the total to about 3 millions birr.

Statement by H.E. Ato Meles Zenawi at the Pledging Conference for Countries of the Horn of Africa affected by Drought and Famine


Addis Ababa, 25 August 2011 – African Union (AU) leaders gathered at the first ever AU Pledging Conference and made pledges of more than US$350 million dollars toward the relief effort assisting the millions of people in crisis due to the extreme drought and famine conditions in the Horn of Africa.

STATEMENT ON NEWSNIGHT'S FILM ON ETHIOPIA

Press Statement - August 5th, 2011, LONDON

Last night (4th August), BBC Newsnight broadcast a 17-minute film making allegations of human rights abuses against the Ethiopian government. The timing of this report is guaranteed to inflict maximum damage on those who are suffering from the worst drought for sixty years in our region. It was difficult to respond to allegations in the few minutes given to our Deputy Head of Mission, Ambassador Abdirashid Dulane, after the film was aired, when we had not been permitted to see the film in advance. We are issuing this statement to put the record straight.

Ethiopian Diaspora in the UK pledge full support for the GTP

Ethiopians and UK citizens of Ethiopian origin have vowed to contribute their share to the Five-Year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) following discussions and consultations at the Ethiopian Embassy, London on 16th April.

The conference, which drew a cross-section of Diaspora community, successfully concluded its deliberation by issuing a final communiqué.

2nd April, 2011 - Speech delivered by H.E. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to mark the official commencement of the Millennium Dam project


An artist’s rendition of the location where the Millennium Dam is being built between Lebeyat (left) and Neqor (right) mountains on a one-kilometre stretch of land in Benishangul-gumuz Regional State. Of the total 15 turbines the completed hydropower project is to contain, two are to be operational in 44 months to generate 700MW of electricity.

    Ethiopian Cultural Evening cements Ethio-British relations

    Guests gathered at the House of Commons yesterday evening for the 11th annual Ethiopian Cultural Evening, which Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the UK, H.E. Berhanu Kebede, described as “a hallmark of the fraternal relations between the people and Governments of Ethiopia and Britain”.

He also outlined Ethiopian Government policies which fight poverty, empower people and expand education.

    Birmingham Peace and Development Conference
