Members of the Ethiopian Diaspora residing in the UK marked the Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and People's Day (NNPD) in London, reflecting on the significant gains made in respect for the political, economic, social and civil rights of people which empowered them to be the masters of their own destiny.
The celebrations of the NNPD at the Ethiopian Embassy in London was organised by the Ethiopian Somali community in the UK, in collaboration with the various development associations.

Bradford University in the UK has conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Education on H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The Deputy PM earned his post-graduate degree in Peace Studies from Bradford where he read inter alia philosophy, history, sociology and politics, which informed his leadership career in various capacities and portfolios.
H.E. Demeke Mekonnen has delivered outstanding service in his current post and also in his previous posts as Minister for Education and, prior to that, as Deputy Head of the Amhara Regional State.

UK Parliamentarians, Businesses Explore Ethiopia’s Initiative for Investment, Trade

Members of the Ethiopia All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and scores of businesses have agreed to boost relations with Ethiopia and promote investment and trade, exploiting to the full the enabling environment created by one of Africa’s emerging economies.
The announcement was made at an annual event where parliamentarians discussed and explored areas for engagement in Ethiopia’s multi-faceted development programme. The main focus was on agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, services and the development of social facilities.
Ashegoda Wind-Farm Project to launch

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has announced that the Ashegoda Wind-Farm, the largest wind-farm in Africa, will be inaugurated on Saturday 26th October 2013.
Ashegoda has a capacity of 120MW and will produce about 400 million KWh a year. The project was completed in 36 months and devised to be executed in phases. All units have now been constructed and are already providing energy to the National Grid. So far, Ashegoda has produced 90 Million KWh since its commissioning started, in stages, one year ago with the earlier commissioned units.

September 28, 2013 - The Amhara Development Association (ADA-UK) urged members and supporters to diversify and deepen engagement in all fields of endeavour for the successful implementation of Ethiopia’s sustainable development plan.
The London-based organisation was established in 2008 by Amhara nationals residing in Great Britain, to support the health and education programes in the region as well as to enhance the active participation of the Diaspora in the overall development of the region.

The first anniversary of the passing away of the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was marked in a solemn memoriam held in London in the presence of over 500 Ethiopians paying tributes and celebrating the outstanding contributions of the Great Leader for his country and people.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the visionary Ethiopian leader and Pan-Africanist, was laid to rest at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa after he passed away on 20th August last year at the age of 57.

Ethiopians in the UK rededicated themselves to supporting the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) at the 22nd anniversary of May 28 when the Dergue regime fell and new vistas for Ethiopia’s Renaissance opened up.
Members of the Diaspora pledged more rigorous support of the national economic transformation that is transforming living conditions through the implementation of pro-poor economic policies and strategies.

Africa has struck gold this year with the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Organization of African Unity/AU being observed across the continent and beyond under the theme “The Year of Pan-Africanism, the African Renaissance.”
The 50th anniversary and Africa Day were colourfully celebrated on the 17th May, 2013 at the Langham Hotel here in London.

Ethiopian Foreign Minister and Chairperson of the Executive Council of the African Union, Dr. Tedros Adhanom told participants at the Africa Jubilee Business Forum that Africa of today is not the Africa of yester years.
The continent is “slowly but surely, shedding off the stereotype images of being a continent of famines, droughts, conflicts, utter poverty and dictatorships, that portray Africa to be a lost case in many peoples’ imagination,” he said.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom, told a Chatham House platform that Africa, which was once the marginalised continent, has now emerged, as some put it, "the new Eldorado", at a time when much of the developing world is suffering from the economic slump, thus rekindling a great sense of hope and optimism.
Africa’s profile on the world stage has been raised and it is no exaggeration to state that Africa has now become a force to be reckoned with.

Tributes were paid to Ethiopia’s exceptional leader, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, for his outstanding contribution to the renaissance of both Ethiopia and Africa during his tenure which spanned two decades.
The late Premier died in August last year and his funeral took place at Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa in the presence of tens of thousands of mourners including world leaders.

The Meles Foundation, established in honour of Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, was inaugurated on 6th April at the African Union in the presence of high-level dignitaries including Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and former First Lady Azeb Mesfin.
The Meles Foundation will serve as a memorial centre to the late PM’s great contribution towards peace, socio-economic development and his lead role in climate change negotiations and environmental protection.

Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Ato Demeke Mekonnen, met and held talks with former British Prime Minister, The Rt. Honourable Gordon Brown, in his office at the House of Commons. Mr. Brown is also the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education.
The Deputy Premier, who is also Minister for Education, was in London as the head of a high-level delegation attending the Education World Forum, convened to dwell at length on policy making for quantity, quality and impact.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam was elected Chairman of the African Union in a ceremony held at the opening session of the 20th Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government held on Sunday, January 27, taking over from Dr. Boni Yayi, the President of the Republic of Benin.
In his acceptance speech Prime Minister Hailmariam thanked the outgoing chairman for his outstanding leadership during his tenure of office and vowed to do his best as Chairman of the AU. He also thanked the August Assembly for paying tribute to the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles, and NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) for endorsing the proposal made by the NEPAD Agency to establish the Meles Zenawi Centre for Sustainable Development in recognition of the late prime minister’s immense contributions to the African Union and to the cause of Africa.

Your article on DFID’s support for Ethiopia’s development is very misleading. (UK tenders to train Ethiopian paramilitaries accused of abuses, online on January 10, 2013, in the print edition on January 11, 2013)
Blanket condemnation of the federal and regional government efforts to protect civilians of Ethiopia’s Somali region from atrocities committed by ONLF terrorists is unfair. The difficult job they do in a region which borders Somalia, where al-Shabaab and international groups were freely operating hand-in-glove until recently, should be given due recognition.
